Diversions

At approaching a year and 1/2 since I played pick up team sports, I have had to find diversions to plug my competitive jones. In the fall and winter of 2010, I joined the legions of fantasy football enthusiasts who live out their - yes, fantasies - pretending to be coaches and scouts in the NFL.

D-Wade D-ismantles Pierce

The announcers and the press, as usual have it all wrong. What happened yesterday in the deciding minutes of the Heat / Celts was master chess and master messaging from Dwyane Wade and James Jones making Paul Pierce look like a rookie.

Hooray, the evil Duke is Dead

One of the most irritating and predictable flaws in the generally unsurpassed excitement of March Madness is the Duke factor. From gushing analysts to arrogant rich white people pretending to be fans to referees making biased call after call, Duke is inevitably going to be helped along its way towards the Final Four. Not this year, though, and now those of us who are true basketball fans can sit back and watch the teams decide a champ.

The Road Back: Weeks 1-2

Diet

I started off with the South Beach Diet, a low-carb diet, for a couple of reasons (neither of them compelling). Firstly, I was familiar with it, having done it before. Secondly, I wanted to shed lbs quickly for morale and it's fairly productive at that in the first stage.

Bottoming Out

In my early- mid thirties, a bunch of changes happened to me physically. One day my metabolism decided to change and weight began to cling to my frame. Where previously I could pretty much eat whatever and whenever I wanted and burn it off quickly, suddenly love handles and rolls began to emerge, replacing muscle tone. I found myself having to work harder to stay doughier than I preferred.

9 Months, Final Checkup

Last week - 9 months after tearing my ACL, both menisci and ripping a piece of cartilage off my femur, I saw my doctor and was cleared to resume rec sports. I had x-rays done on both knees - my right knee having already had 2 microfractures on it - has been bothering my off and on. Particularly during PT, it had been aching and throbbing, worrying me.

Six Month Checkup

Six months is the normal, minimum turnaround on an ACL. I saw my doc last week and overall, he was overall pleased with the knee. We spoke about my recurring pain when walking after sitting for extending periods and after sleeping, and the sense I got from him was this may be a condition that hangs around long term. He cleared me to do some light jogging and wrote the prescription for me to continue with physical therapy. I spoke to him about aches and throbbing I have been having in my right knee. We will meet again in three months and assess both knees, possibly doing x-rays on both.
